CST STUDIO SUITE and GPU computing

The high memory bandwidth and parallel processing abilities of GPU cards mean that
GPU computing can provide significant simulation speed advantages over conventional
CPU computing. CST STUDIO SUITE® supports GPU computing in the transient solver,
integral equation solver, asymptotic solver, particle-in-cell (PIC) solver, and in the new conjugated heat transfer solver using NVIDIA Tesla® or high-end Quadro GPU cards.

All GPU-capable solvers now support the newest generation Pascal series Tesla cards which are dedicated for server-class systems; selected Quadro cards are supported for workstations. 

The GPU cards of the Pascal generation (Tesla P100 and Quadro GP100) offer an impressive speed-up over the high-end models of the previous Kepler series generation as the following diagram shows

What makes the performance improvement as compared to CPU even more impressive is the fact that the speedup numbers in the diagram are achieved when comparing to a really high end CPU configuration with dual Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs. Thus, the new Pascal generation is nowadays the recommended platform for GPU computing with CST STUDIO SUITE.

Due to the very good scalability of our GPU implementations with the number of GPU devices, simulations can be accelerated even further by adding more GPU cards to a host system as the following diagram shows for a transient simulation with 82 million mesh cells. The reference is again provided by a system with dual Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs.

A gyrotron is typically challenging to simulate in 3D, as they often are electrically large. High-performance computing using one or multiple graphics processing Units (GPU) can accelerate simulations significantly and make the 3D Particle in Cell (PIC) simulation of a gyrotron a viable proposition. A brief introduction will be given of a gyrotron working at the fundamental frequency, but the focus of the webinar will be a simulation of a gyrotron operating at 2nd harmonic frequency. The B-field can be reduced by a factor of 2, but this operation is sensitive in both the physical domain and in simulation. This webinar shows aspects to keep in mind when setting up the simulation and explains the differences between simulation and measurements.

Support of Intel Omni-Path HPC Interconnect

The Transient Solver is one of the flagship solvers of CST STUDIO SUITE®, and with MPI computing it can be used to simulate electrically very large and complex models efficiently – for example: lightning strike, large antenna arrays, or antenna placement. Typically, the solver loop/solver run is where most of the computational time is spent during a transient simulation. MPI computing allows the computational workload of a large model to be split across computer cluster with a high-speed interconnect. CST STUDIO SUITE 2017 adds support for Intel’s new Omni-Path HPC interconnect. The picture shows the strong scaling of the transient solver loop on cluster system consisting of dual Intel® Xeon E5-2697A v4 processors, 64GB RAM per node, and an Intel® Omni-Path interconnect. The model size is 200 million mesh cells.

Performance of CST STUDIO SUITE® Solvers on new Intel Xeon Scalable Processor

The new Intel Xeon Scalable Processor (also known as “Skylake”) improves the memory bandwidth and compute power (core count) significantly compared to the previous generation (Broadwell). This means that computationally-demanding and memory-intensive algorithms both benefit from the enhancements of the new CPU generation. CST has performed benchmarking on a system equipped with dual Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs and has seen performance improvements for a broad range of applications and solvers when comparing to a system with dual Xeon E5-2697 v4 CPUs as shown in the picture below.
